在顏色的選取方面，倡議運用白色面料，由于其他顏色的面料經強光映照后顏色會變成黃色或者紅色，而白色（通常是漂白或本性）反光性強，相對其他顏色反射性較好故不易呈現變色現象，能更有效維護身體。通常是全棉坯布做成漂白色再去做防火阻燃的后處置。

工作服的材質普通不要選用合成纖維織物，而應選用全棉帆布工作服或全棉阻燃布。在焊接工作中，滌綸或其他化學纖維布料遇熱會變成液態或呈現滴融現象粘在身上，很容易惹起燒傷、燙傷或灼燒；而棉制的工作服比擬耐高溫，即便燒著之后也只會變成灰而且不會變型或有滴融現象。
